Before electricity, Sydney had a hydraulic pressure
system which powered wool presses, wharf cranes, lifts in commercial buildings and bank vault doors.
Private enterprise promoted this most useful power service which ran,
hidden from view, beneath Sydney's streets. Without this useful source of
power to work lifts, hoists and cranes the height of buildings in Sydney
would have been restricted to the number of flights of stairs people were
prepared to climb, or carry up goods. The building has a three-storey Italianate façade, with massive load-bearing brick walls. It now houses the
Pumphouse Restaurant and Bar.
